Marthinus Kirsten is a freelance Illustrator and Graphic artist, specialising in ink on paper and textured digital art. His surrealistic creatures evokes both thought and delight with their quirkiness.
“I’ve been doing illustration and design for the last 8 years and I studied Graphic design at Tshwane University of Technology and finished a year course at the Open Window institute for 3D animation (Maya7). My collections range from satirical to more surrealistic artworks with a mixture of topics like famous idioms and popular culture.”
He has done cartoon/comic strips for various magazines and newspapers like The Beeld/Jip/Huisgenoot in the past as well as the graphic art on films like ‘Tremors 5: Bloodlines’ (Universal studios) and ‘The Siege of Jadotville’ (Netflix). He also worked on concept art for television advertisements including the ‘Be Indie’ ads. These projects gave him a firm understanding of who he is as an artist and it kicked off his ‘Haarig’ collections. He has also launched a graphic novel with his girlfriend, which they have written and illustrated.
