Tharien Smith is a visual artist who was born in Bloemfontein, schooled in Jozi and graduated with a National Textile Diploma from TUT in 1995. She currently resides in Cape Town, combining skills to create beautiful artworks spanning across multiple mediums, such as textiles, fashion, furniture, ceramics and painting.
She has spent most of her career working in various creative corporate environments, designing everything from furnishing fabrics to fashion, graphics and ceramic tiles. Tharien is fascinated with perspective, chiaroscuro, Fibonacci sequence, and an avid admirer of nature. She loves to experiment and explore new techniques.
About five years ago she decided to follow her passion to follow her dreams and let creativity lead the way. The journey is tough, sometimes painful and sometimes very rewarding, but it is mostly a beautiful process.
There isn’t a manual to being an artist, and there isn’t a manual for being alive. Obstacles and challenges throughout life are inevitable. For me being creative means taking risks and ignoring doubt and facing my fears. I am an observer, giving the viewer a ‘slice of life’, be it an emotion, a situation or a moment in time.
