Encaustic Painting Beginners Course
Encaustic painting involves painting with heated encaustic medium (beeswax and damar resin) to which colored pigments are added. The medium is then applied to an absorbent medium (we use birchwood) and fused with a heating device such as a blow torch.
The encaustic painting workshops are designed to excite, encourage and breathe life into your creative process. It is a challenging medium that promises to stretch your artistic boundaries. The process is organic and begs you to let go!
Come and immerse yourself in a deep yet playful exploration of encaustic painting and creative practices. It is a relatively new art form in South Africa, although commonly used internationally.

The Beginners Course is a step-by-step guide that takes you through the process of creating and working with encaustic. The course will teach you about:
- Materials, tools and equipment;
- Creating a smooth surface and priming your panel;
- Prepare your own encaustic medium made from scratch and how to turn that medium into coloured encaustic paint;
- Using a blowtorch;
- Troubleshooting.
All materials are included and you will make two 150mm x 150mm and one 200mm x 200mm artwork during the course.
