Who doesn’t just looove a new beginning? The start of a New Year is no different, and a new Decade, even more significant! The thought of a New Year instill some kind of re-evaluation in our lives and we are more acutely aware of turning a page. We feel excited about new possibilities, and in a strange way, it feels quite literally that we have been given a second chance. You feel energised and inspired to live the best version of your life, and even the most cynical among us might have decided to make a few New Year’s resolutions for a change this year. Then the first week dissolves into thin air, and that feeling pass as we settle into our comfortable old habits again.
But what if you can have a new beginning that last? An impactful change in our mediocre lives?
It is actually so much easier than you think. No grand gestures, no unrealistic goals. Just a few very small, simple changes in our everyday life, can lead to an entire new life with significantly better habits 365 days down the line. The key is to keep it simple and doable, so here goes:
– Clutter: Get rid of the things that drain your energy. Whether it is a closet full of unused items, toxic friends, unhealthy food or a bad habit. Anything that makes your life feel like a mess. Throw it out. Guilt-free.
– Digital Detox: We are so super connected with the internet and social media, with information overload at our fingertips, yet we are also more disconnected with each other than ever. People are lonelier than before, and subsequently less happy. Choose one day or evening a week when you completely disconnect from technology. Make a real connection. Visit a friend, take your spouse out on a date, or visit the old age home or hospital and read a story to someone. No phones, no interruptions. Be present in that moment. You will feel an overwhelming sense of purpose and happiness.
– Get out! Experience and enjoy nature. Nurture that connection. Don’t just go excersice in a gym – go for a long walk on the beach, take the dog to a park, take your children on a hiking day in a nature reserve. Get fresh air, get plenty of water, and get a new perspective on things while you are out there, reconnect with nature and with yourself.
– Gratitude: The key to a happy life is a sense of gratitude. Be grateful for the small things. When you get up in the morning, just name 3 things you are grateful for. Starting the day on a positive note will do wonders for your mood, and make you realize how much you have to be thankful for. This will also rewire your brain and change that way you look at things. The simple things in life gives us the most pleasure and fulfillment. Make a few changes for the better and choose happiness deliberately. Surround yourself with people and things that support you goals and energise your soul. Trust the magic of new beginnings, and don’t let this new year energy lose its momentum without taking full advantage the endless possibilities.
